How To Host The Perfect Housewarming Party

After a move, planning a party is probably the last thing you want to do. But once you’ve finished unpacking, a housewarming party is a perfect way for you and your family to meet neighbors and make new friends. First and foremost -- Keep it simple! We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you and your guests enjoy the first of many great nights in your home.

Make Your Guests Feel Welcome Before They Arrive

In the midst of unpacking your new home, you’ll need to send out invitations to your housewarming party. Luckily for you, the days of paper invites, sealing envelopes and sending snail mail for a housewarming party are long gone. E-vites are perfectly appropriate and your guests can quickly add your event to their mobile calendars once they receive their invite.

Be sure to include any and all information your guests need to have a great time in your new home. If you’re in a new area, don’t just supply your new address. Give them some directions or landmarks they may see on their way to your front door. If you’d like them to bring any food or drinks, let them know in advance. Finally, if you’ve themed your party, give them some instructions on how to dress. Ideally, send your invites a month or so in advance. That way, you’ve all got time to prepare for the perfect housewarming party.

Keep the Menu Familiar and Fun

Your housewarming party is not the place to test out new recipes on your family and friends. You’ll impress your guests and make things easier on yourself by sticking to your trusted family favorites. For your housewarming party, pick foods that are easy for guests to eat and even some that may spark conversation between friends and family who are meeting for the first time. Everyone loves an aesthetically pleasing charcuterie board!

Become the Ultimate Tour Guide

During your housewarming party, remember that this is probably the first time your neighbors, friends and family have seen the inside of your new home and they want to see it! Be prepared to give multiple house tours throughout the party. You don’t need to go into every detail of your new home to impress your guests. Give them a witty, five to ten minute tour of your home.

It won’t hurt to make sure that you’ve got photos of your guests or gifts they’ve given you through the years prominently displayed in your new home, so that your guests can pick them out while they’re on tour. You can always rearrange after your party if it doesn’t quite fit your vibe!

Create a Comfortable Atmosphere

Your housewarming party is probably just the first of many events you’ll host in your home. Set the mood for this and the events to follow by creating a warm, relaxing atmosphere in your new home and your guests will be begging to come back.
Provide ambient lighting and a music playlist that will appeal to all audiences. Ample seating should be a top priority at your housewarming party, too. From your living room to your kitchen and patio, make sure there are plenty of cozy places where your guests can mingle.
Lastly, be sure to clean up the clutter! We know moving can create quite a mess, but hopefully by the day of your party everything has its place.

The last thing we are going to say is this: stop overthinking it. Sometimes people new to a neighborhood feel overly inclined to impress their neighbors and become the popular kid in the cul-de-sac. Simply put, your neighbors will like you for you (assuming you are a good, courteous neighbor). Throwing a housewarming party can be a sign of respect and it shows them that you are taking time out of your life to get to know them. Relax and remember to have fun!
